New York video wins place in The Best American Infographics 2013

We are delighted that our real time video New York City’s Carbon Emissions has been included as a winner in The Best American Infographics 2013. The video is featured as one of just 10 interactive infographics. The winners were selected by Eric Rodenbeck of Stamen Design.

In addition to a brilliant selection of interactives in The Best American Infographics 2013, there are 60 other insightful infographics, selected with help from a group of 20 top designers, including Nigel Holmes, John Grimwade, Amanda Cox and Nathan Yau.

David Byrne known as the force behind Talking Heads and a publisher and exhibitor of visual arts, is the guest introducer.

These pieces do something that only this medium can do - they show us things from a perspective that we can never have in real life. ... This category allows us the possibility to grasp how something invisible and unseeable makes itself manifest in our world.
We can see through things, we can see the imagined distant past and sometimes our own implied future, as in the interactive graphic video representation of New York City carbon emissions.
We see great time and distances compressed into manageable size. In this use of infographics we experience a kind of geeky rapture as our senses are amplified and expanded through charts and illustrations.

In the winner from Carbon Visuals’ New York's carbon emissions in real-time the carbon dioxide released into New York's atmosphere each day is made concrete using an accumulation of black spheres rendered at scale.
The pop pop pop of the giant balls lifting up out of city streets made me draw a sharp breath. We're doing WHAT to the atmosphere?
